Most of us know that some difficulties are an expected part of the parenting ride. However, some children struggle significantly more than others with their behaviours, emotions, learning or social skills. No parent plans for this to happen and specialised support may be required.

We believe our approach strikes a balance between identifying difficulties to support AND highlighting strengths to build upon. We acknowledge that every child is unique and rely heavily on parent input to guide our work. 

 

Our practice also understands that an issue with a child rarely occurs in isolation. Parental stress, burnout, and increased sibling and family conflict can often increase when a child has emotional, behavioural or learning difficulties (1), which is why we will always work with parents as part of our work with children. Not doing so would directly conflict with what the research tells us about what gets the best outcomes (2).

Generally, if your child’s difficulties are:

  1. Beyond what we would expect for the child’s age or stage of development (e.g. ability to manage emotions, oppositional behaviours, issues with attention, listening skills, hyperactivity)
  1. Impacting various areas of their life negatively (e.g. friendships, family relationships, school, self-esteem)

 

Other specific Issues:

  • They seem unable to make or maintain healthy friendships
  • You feel they have low self-esteem or confidence
  • Your child is frequently struggling with learning at home or school
  • They seem ‘behind’ in various domains compared to children who are the same age (e.g. learning, emotional awareness, social skills, ability to sit/focus, control their behavioural)
  • Your child seems frequently seems unhappy, anxious or angry 
  • They are often in trouble at school
  • You feel your child is not reaching their potential in their academic or personal life
  • Your child has been identified as gifted although they seem not to be able to show this
  • Sleeping difficulties, changes in eating patterns or significant changes from how they ‘normally’ behave (e.g. behaviours ‘out of the blue’)
  • Your child often reports they feel sick (or other physical issues) despite the Doctor clearing any medical reasons for this occurring. 
  • You continuously feel unsure in your parenting about how best to support them with their needs

Well, you’ve come to the right place! Our team are all very experienced in working with a spectrum of presenting difficulties. All our psychologists have worked in the public mental health, community NGO and/or disability service systems. We know it takes some serious teamwork to help kids with higher support needs and are committed to working collaboratively to get the best outcome possible for your child. We get that the experience of services can be quite different for children and families in this space and do our best to provide continuity of care, throughout what we know is a unique journey.
